Have you ever complained about your child’s school, teachers, books,
lunches, friends, or my favorite, the P.T.A.?
Of course you have, and so have I. It seems that the younger we are, the
more we complain about things we can’t change. If you want your children to do
the best they can do, you better stop complaining and get off your butt. It’s
not enough that your child has a parent. You have to do something.
I want to talk about how we can help school children of all ages. However,
since my youngest is twelve, let’s start there. At twelve, he is in the sixth
grade. He has a schedule. That’s right, a schedule. He is up at 7, and off to
school by 8:30. When he gets home in the afternoon, it’s right to the
homework. After that he can play till dinnertime. After dinner, he can play
again till 8. At 8pm (play ends - no more friends) it’s time for him to
correct the problems that I may have found with his homework, or whatever little
stuff he needs to get done. From 9 to 10 we both sit down and read for an hour.
You heard me right! I read too. At 10 it’s off to bed.
So, how do you think he is doing in school? DUH !
School Chat is about sharing the things we are doing right and helping each other fix the stuff we are doing wrong. If you would like to join in, write me a letter. Ask a question, or share a success story of your own.
